Allianz's second Sustainability Week (29th June - 3rd July) of 2020 is in full swing with activities during the whole week for employees and their families.

The theme for the second Sustainability week is 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - virtually' - highlighting the need to reduce waste both at home and but also digitally. The week will highlight to employees and customers the impact of waste- including encouraging everyone to do a digital declutter to reduce our impact on the environment.

Allianz is the number one insurer worldwide in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and in the UK last year we reduced our energy consumption by 42%

. But we are always looking for more ways to be sustainable and reduce our environmental footprint and in the UK we are aiming for 100% renewable energy across all offices by 2023.

This Sustainability Week, we're engaging with employees and their families to get people thinking about their homes and how these can be greener -and also how much data they use at work.

Did you know

When sending an email there are many steps that result in producing carbon emissions, from the power used at data centres to the power computers use to send, filter and read the messages. A standard email has a footprint equivalent to 0.3g of CO2 emissions. This can rise to 50g when the email has a large attachment

.

To put it into perspective... if every adult in the UK sent one less email we would conserve more than 16,000 tons of CO2 per year - equal to 81,000 flights from London to Madrid

.

Between 2012-2017, Allianz reduced the number of data centres from more than 140 to just six. Both our European data centres (in Paris and Frankfurt) as well as both US data centres (in Phoenix and Edison) are able to source 100% of our electricity from renewable sources.

However, despite these sustainable changes the volume of data that is being processed continues to grow, so energy consumption can't be cut back every year. So we're helping employees to reduce our energy consumption by changing to more sustainable digital practices and carrying out a digital declutter.

We can all help to reduce our energy consumption by changing to more sustainable digital practices such as mailbox management, deleting unwanted files and sending short messages on an instant messenger - saving that inbox! Why not have a digital declutter this week too?
