Singapore, 7 March 2017- IN, the award-winning news magazine for secondary school students published by The Straits Times (ST), is now available in a highly anticipated digital version.

Launched today, the IN mobile app allows readers to keep up with the latest issues and access archived editions of IN -- news and features written for teenagers in a friendly, accessible way to promote critical literacy skills and English language abilities. The app is available for both iOS and Android.

For the first time, parents, students and other individual ST subscribers can now subscribe to the weekly IN publication. Previously, IN was only available through bulk subscriptions by schools.

Individual ST subscribers who sign up for the digital version of IN in March will get an 18% discount off the retail price. They will pay only $33.30 for a year's subscription (37 issues). The normal retail price for Digital IN is $40.70 per year.

School subscribers also get a discount, with pricing starting from $13.20 for 12 issues.

The app has many attractive features for students:

  • Readers can download issues and store them on their phones to read offline, minimising the data usage needed.

  • Links to videos and interactive graphics from The Straits Times, other SPH news sites as well as relevant third-party sources give users a richer, more engaging multimedia experience.

  • Stories that are of particular interest to a user can be stored a folder called 'My Clippings', for easy reference at a later time.

  • Exclusively for teachers: The digital version of IN includes complimentary additional resources developed specially for educators, to make their lesson planning easier.

Ms Fiona Chan, The Straits Times Managing Editor and Head of the ST Schools department, which also produces Little Red Dot for primary schools and organises national school events such as The Big Spell, said the IN app is just one of a series of new educational tools being developed by The Straits Times and ST Schools to enhance their offerings for both students and educators.

'From a fun pop-up newsroom to teach younger children about jobs in the media to professional development workshops that train teachers in advanced skills such as feature writing, ST is constantly finding new and innovative ways to reach students, educators and parents in the classroom and beyond,' she said.

Ms Serene Luo, Editor of IN and Little Red Dot, said the IN app and home subscription model were developed in response to overwhelming demand from print IN readers.

'The young person today is more comfortable on his mobile device than any other media, and we want to reach them on their turf,' she said. 'That way we can help him learn more about the world and the issues that matter today, and ensure the quality of the news he is reading.'

Ms Luo added: 'We are also making a fundamental change to our subscription model, to cater to home subscribers who have long asked for access to IN outside of the school environment.'

ST subscribers who are interested in subscribing to IN can sign up by emailingcirschool@sph.com.sg.
