Alfen has been selected by Finnish utility Fortum and distribution grid operator Caruna to supply a 1 MW (1MWh) energy storage system in the Helsinki capital area. This storage system is the first order under a new framework agreement between Fortum and Alfen, covering both energy storage systems as well as transformer substations.

The energy storage system will be used to provide back-up power for a mid-voltage section of Caruna's power grid. The section consists of 20 mid-voltage transformers and provides energy to 334 households and few enterprises. In addition, Fortum will use the storage system to provide ancillary services (frequency control) supporting Fingrid, the Finnish transmission grid operator.

Ilari Alaperä, Business Development Manager at Fortum comments: 'Alfen's broad experience with energy storage systems in the Nordics as well as their deep understanding of our local situation through their position in Finnish Alfen Elkamo, makes them the ideal partner for us. We look forward to jointly work towards a future that increasingly relies on renewable energy and electric vehicles.'

Antti Keskinen, Development Manager of Innovations at Caruna comments: 'Our mission is to guarantee reliable electricity supply to our customers under all circumstances. We are anticipating a future in which digital services increase, transport is electrified and the consumer becomes a producer of energy. This requires new solutions in our network, for which this innovative energy storage system is an important step.'

Yves Vercammen, Sales Manager at Alfen adds: 'This framework agreement is a nice testament to our broad experience in the Nordics across all our business lines Smart grids, EV charging and Energy storage. We look forward to support both Fortum and Caruna in preparing their businesses for a sustainable future.'

The project is expected to be operational in Q1 2020.
