Neste Corporation - In Finland, there is a widespread industrial strike threat on 9-11 December 2019 which would widely affect Neste as well.

There are altogether 2,400 employees in Neste's operations involved in the possible strike in Finland.

An operator like Neste has an important role in ensuring the security of health care, movement and heating, rescue and law enforcement as well as food security in Finland. The disruption of fuel distribution caused by a possible prolonged exceptional situation would greatly injure the road, sea and air transport as well as Finland's exports. It would complicate for example the operations of the rescue authorities, the delivery of heating oils for different premises and harm other industrial businesses.

'Malfunctions caused by this possible strike at Neste would have a wide impact on the Finnish society on a nation-wide scale. We are very concerned about the situation and sincerely hope that it will be solved in order to secure the movement of people and goods and the safe operations of the society in Finland,' says Hannele Jakosuo-Jansson, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, HSSEQ and Procurement at Neste.

Processes in the chemical industry are complex and susceptible to unplanned changes. There are several operators in Kilpilahti whose processes are interconnected and designed to function continuously. A malfunction in this type of process always entails an increased risk of equipment failure and personal safety as well as environmental harm.

'Neste's refineries are very safety-critical facilities that need to avoid unplanned changes. Ensuring the safe operation of production requires long-term planning and leading, as refinery production processes are exceptionally complex. The safe operation of refineries requires lots of special knowledge. When a functionally demanding refinery like Porvoo for example typically shuts down for maintenance every five years, the preparation planning lasts for several years,' says Marko Pekkola, Executive Vice President, Oil Products at Neste.
