Lucara Diamond Corporation has partnered with Louis Vuitton and HB Company to polish its 1758 carat diamond, Sewelo.

Sewelo diamond was recovered at Karowe mine in Botswana in April 2019 through a state of the art X-ray technology.

According to a news release from Lucara Diamond website www.lucaradiamond.com, Lucara has collaborated with Louis Vuitton to polish Botswana's largest diamond, Sewelo.

Sewelo which means 'rare find' in Setswana is the second, +1000 carat diamond recovered from Karowe in four years and the largest ever recovered in Botswana.

The diamond has been characterised as near gem of variable quality, with recent analysis confirming that it includes domains of higher quality white gem.

The release further states that Lucara believes that the full potential of the special stone will only be revealed once polished. It says the purpose of the unprecedented collaboration between a miner, a cutting edge manufacturer and a large luxury brand includes planning, cutting and polishing of a collection of diamonds from Sewelo.

It states that Lucara will receive an upfront non-material payment for Sewelo and retain 50 per cent interest in the individual polished diamonds that would result.

It further states that five per cent of retail sales proceeds generated from the historic collection will be invested directly back into Botswana on community based initiatives undertaken by Lucara.

Lucara Diamond chief executive officer was quoted saying, 'We are delighted to be partnering with Louis Vuitton, the famous luxury house to transform the historic 1758 carat Sewelo, Botswana's largest diamond into a collection of fine jewellery that would commemorate the extraordinary discovery and contributes direct benefits to our local communities of interest in Botswana,' she said.

Sewelo diamond was named in Botswana by a Motswana in July 2019, and President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi commended Lucara Botswana for according Batswana the courtesy to name the largest diamond during the naming gala dinner held in Gaborone.

President Masisi stated that the exercise strengthened connection between the people and the resource.

He commended Lucara for their achievements in their seven years' operation in Botswana.

Government, he said, wished to see Botswana story told across the world where diamond would be a subject of discussion.
