Heineken NV said Thursday that it is pausing its advertisement spending on Facebook and Instagram globally for July and that it is reviewing its overall social-media strategy, citing concern about harmful content.

"We will continue to engage in collaborative dialogue with our social media partners with the goal of meaningfully addressing hate speech and misinformation on their platforms," the Dutch brewer said in an emailed statement.

Heineken joins other major marketers like Coca-Cola Co., Unilever PLC or Diageo PLC in halting advertising on social-media platforms.
