VAUGHAN, Ontario (AP) _ Waste Connections Inc. (WCN) on Thursday reported a second-quarter loss of $227.1 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

The Vaughan, Ontario-based company said it had a loss of 86 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, came to 60 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of eight analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 55 cents per share.

The solid waste services provider posted revenue of $1.31 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Seven analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $1.3 billion.

Waste Connections expects full-year revenue of $5.33 billion.

Waste Connections shares have risen 14% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Thursday, shares hit $103.13, an increase of 15% in the last 12 months.
