Shares of energy companies rose as oil futures tested the highs of the year.

Oil futures closed just shy of $82 a barrel in New York, coming within 2% of its 2024 high, after reports that the Islamic State had committed a massacre in a theatre on the outskirts of Moscow.

PetroChina, the listed arm of state-owned China National Petroleum Corp., posted an 8.3% increase in quarterly profit.
