Senegal's cotton production is forecast to rise 20% in the marketing year from August 2023 through July 2024 compared with the prior year, the U.S. Agriculture Department said late Monday.

Production is now expected at 30,000 480-pound bales in the current year from 25,000 bales a year earlier, the USDA said in its cotton and products update. Senegal exports all its cotton output.

The forecast has been lowered from 40,000 bales previously due to drought in some areas, it said.

The country's cotton planted area is estimated to rise 6% to 18,000 hectares (44,460 acres) in 2023-24 as farmers were incentivized to plant cotton after the government waived all input debts following the loss of revenue due to leafhopper infestations in the prior marketing year.
