The EU's Digital Markets Act applies not only to iOS, but now also to iPad OS. Apple has six months from the European Commission to modify its system software in the same way it does for iPhones.

That includes allowing iPad users to download apps from alternative app stores (such as AltStore) and the ability to use an alternative default browser.

Apple's implementation of the DMA rules is currently being evaluated. Companies such as Spotify still object to certain restrictions Apple imposes on developers.

The requirement comes a week before Apple is set to announce new iPad Airs and Pros. Chances are the new iPad Pros will be equipped with an M4 chip. According to Bloomberg's usually well-informed Mark Gurman, there are strong indications of that. This would make the iPad the first Apple hardware with such a chip.

Apple would like to market the tablet as "the first true AI device," with a new Neural Engine and more machine learning capabilities.

What is certain is that the iPad Pro will be equipped with an OLED screen. Apple has been using OLED since 2017 in the iPhone and since the very first Apple Watch.

The screens will also be slightly larger, 11.1- and 13.1-inches. Currently, Apple uses 11- and 12.9-inch sizes.

What is less certain is that the iPads will be able to charge wirelessly, whether or not via MacSafe. The FaceTime camera may be located on the side.
