CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) joined force with Government departments on the power supply project for the Penny's Bay Quarantine Centre on Lantau Island, completing planning, construction, and connection work in a record shortest time.

The project ensures a safe, reliable power supply for the centre, which timely provides 1,500 units for the Phase 1 and 2 compulsory quarantine centre and supports the Government's fight to safeguard Hong Kong people against COVID-19.

Mr Wong Shu-tong, Engineer I from Power Systems Business Group of CLP Power, who was responsible for construction of the supply network, said the centre was created on undeveloped land that lacked any power network or basic infrastructure. 'The project was extremely challenging in terms of time and project planning,' he said. 'Normally, it takes several months to build a new power grid.' However, with the determined efforts of different departments and contractors, the CLP Power engineering team overcame the challenges and completed the power connection for the Penny's Bay Quarantine Centre with each phase taking only about two months.

Head of the Civil Engineering Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department Ir Aaron Bok praised the CLP Power engineering team for its professional performance. He said: 'We have a close partnership with CLP Power who is very professional. They shared with us their valuable experience and advice to ensure a safe and high-quality delivery of the project.' He also applauded the dedication of different Government departments, contractors, and CLP Power, saying the team showed great solidarity in fighting the pandemic, and called on every citizen to stay healthy and happy and continue to help avoid the spread of the virus in the community.

CLP Power Managing Director Mr T K Chiang said: 'The COVID-19 pandemic has been with us for over nine months now. During this challenging time, CLP staff have performed their duties conscientiously and continued to provide a highly reliable power supply to the community. Our engineering team has deployed its power expertise and professional knowledge to support Hong Kong's fight against the pandemic.' Mr Chiang thanked the Government for its trust in, and support for, CLP Power.
