Duke Energy on Wednesday said it has begun building a new 50MW solar project in North Carolina's Cleveland County.

The Broad River Solar power plant will be owned and operated by Duke's commercial subsidiary, Duke Energy Renewables, the company said.

"The project was selected as part of the competitive bidding process established by 2017's landmark solar legislation in North Carolina," Duke Energy said.

The new power plant will have over 170,000 solar panels spread across about 500 acres and will power the equivalent of 12,500 homes, the company said, adding power generated will be sold through a 20-year power purchase agreement.

The site, one of over 40 Duke Energy solar plants in the state, is expected to reach commercial operation by the end of this year, Duke Energy said.
