JR East briefly hit by system disruption due to cyberattack

TOKYO - East Japan Railway Co. said Friday it was temporarily hit by system disruptions with its Mobile Suica app and "Eki-net" online reservation system, with unusual traffic patterns pointing to a cyberattack.

The operator, known as JR East, said the issue was largely resolved more than four hours later, at around 10 p.m. Train operations were not affected.

Football: Urawa see off Incheon 2-1 to win AFC Women's Club C'ship

Japanese assemblyman quits over harassment of Aussie mayor's daughter

GIFU, Japan - The vice speaker of a city assembly in central Japan handed in his resignation to the assembly office on Friday after allegedly sexually harassing the daughter of an Australian mayor at a party last month, the office said.

Norio Nagata of the Minokamo city assembly in Gifu Prefecture decided to quit the post after the city's mayor Hiroto Fujii sent an apology email to its sister-city Dubbo in New South Wales late last month.

Top U.S., Chinese climate diplomats agree to promote cooperation

WASHINGTON - The top U.S. and Chinese climate diplomats held talks this week and confirmed bilateral cooperation in reducing greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide, such as methane emitted from fossil fuel production, the State Department said Friday.

John Podesta, senior advisor to President Joe Biden for global climate policy, and his Chinese counterpart Liu Zhenmin co-led two days of working group discussions through Thursday in Washington.

Honda logs record annual profits on hybrid sales, weak yen

TOKYO - Honda Motor Co. said Friday its net profit for the year ended March rose 70.0 percent from a year earlier to a record 1.11 trillion yen ($7.1 billion), boosted by robust sales of hybrid cars and a weak yen.

Operating profit soared 77.0 percent to 1.38 trillion yen on sales of 20.43 trillion yen, up 20.8 percent, the Japanese automaker said. Both figures are record highs.

Owner of unauthorized MSDF drone video knew risks, shared for fun

TOKYO - The owner of a video allegedly showing drone footage of a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel in port has said he posted the video to social media to attract attention despite knowing it was illegal to fly drones in the area.

The video, which appears to provide a clear shot from above of the deck of the carrier Izumo while it was anchored at an MSDF base in Yokosuka, south of Tokyo, stirred controversy after it was posted on a Chinese social media platform earlier this year.
