Smoking and Respiratory Diseases: Free Screening at Hospital da Luz Setúbal

29-05-19

Hospital da Luz Setúbal will offer, next June 6, free screening on smoking habits evaluation and respiratory diseases symptoms, to the public in general. The initiative will be assured by the team of the Pulmonology Service of this hospital, in the scope of the World No Tobacco Day (May 31).

During screening, the participants will be invited to answer a questionnaire to detect respiratory diseases - such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), asthma and lung cancer - and respective symptoms (cough, wheeze and frequent colds), as well as to evaluate smoking habits and addiction. Screening includes spirometry and CO measuring (pulmonary diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide).

Remember that:

  • the effects of tobacco use are the major cause of avoidable death, not only for smokers, but for those exposed to smoking;
  • according to the World Health Organization, around five million people die every year, all over the world, as a consequence of smoking;
  • each cigarette smoked shortens life eight minutes, on average;
  • to stop smoking has many benefits, namely at physical level (palate and olfaction enhancement, risk of disease reduction), psychological (self-esteem improvement, individual competences reinforcement) and socioeconomic level (family budget improvement and social acceptance).

Participate in the screening!

Place and schedule: June 6, Hospital da Luz Setúbal (ground 0), 9:00-18:00.
