In 2016, sales of data center interconnect (DCI) gear increased by 50%, reaching $1.9B, according to IHS Markit in its biannual DCI, OTN and packet-optical hardware report. The growth won't stop there: the research firm projects the segment will continue to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18% through 2012, reaching $4.5B in annual sales. As a vendor that's active in the DCI market and offers comprehensive optical solutions, we are not surprised to come across such bullish projections.

There are several reasons why demand for equipment that facilitates the interconnection of data centers safely, efficiently, and intelligently is exploding. For years, data center connectivity served enterprise applications with disaster recovery and other regulatory aspects. But, with the proliferation of cloud services, came a complete revolution of dynamic data in enormous capacities. This trend continues to grow and drives more data centers to distribute compute to the edge to ensure end-users, no matter their location, enjoy a seamless experience.

Early adopters of this strategy include internet content providers (ICPs) that decided to build their own data centers and networks across tier-1 and tier 2 markets. Web 2.0 giants like Facebook and Google have fashioned ecosystems that incorporate geographically desperate proprietary data centers, colocation facilities, and telco central offices to optimize the performance of their far-reaching digital platforms. In order to coalesce these distinct locations into a unified environment, it was necessary for them to procure networking equipment that allowed content to flow rapidly between each. Similarly, hyperscale cloud computing vendors have leveraged a wide variety data centers (proprietary and third party) to ensure that users could transport workloads between an array of nodes situated across different facilities to maximize their radius of coverage and resiliency.

Finally, enterprises became attuned to the benefits of interconnecting data center facilities. Pursuing hybrid IT strategies, where the ultimate goal is to make sure every application is operating in its ideal execution venue in real-time, companies across all industries are starting to deploy gear across carrier hotels, colocation data centers, and proprietary facilities. They often elicit the help of network service providers to establish direct fiber links between these locations to ensure that sensitive data transferring between each of the critical environments is delivered expediently and securely. However, establishing the connections between locations wasn't enough-enterprises wanted the same on-demand elasticity they enjoyed from cloud computing and sought after DCI solutions that could intelligently deliver connectivity on an as-needed basis.

MRV's OptiDriver is an optical transport solution that introduces much needed flexibility into the DCI world, offering Terabits of capacity over fiber. No matter the size required, the same optical modules are used in every chassis, simplifying your network and protecting your investment. Our solution reduces rack space costs by up to 75% and power costs by 50%, requiring only 0.22 watts per Gbe of bandwidth. Additionally, MRV's DCI solution is open and programmable for optical SDN to facilitate SD-WAN initiatives, allowing for that cloud-like elasticity. The technology was also developed to interoperate with existing optical transport equipment and is easy to configure to your needs.

Whether you need to link a handful of sites within a single campus or dozens of data centers within 1,000km, MRV has the ideal solution for empowering your Optical Edge. Learn more today.
