Renault announced on Wednesday that it would be teaming up with Chinese start-up WeRide to offer fully autonomous vehicles for public transport.

The automotive group says it has initiated a new collaboration with its partner with a view to the large-scale commercial deployment of vehicles displaying a level of autonomy known as 'L4'.

This standard means that vehicles can manage driving situations on their own, within a defined operational domain, with remote supervision, but without an operator on board.

With regard to public transport, Renault estimates that the market for autonomous vehicles could represent an annual need estimated at several thousand miniBuses in the next few years.

A first demonstration in real conditions of the project conducted with WeRide will be carried out on May 26 during the Roland-Garros 2024 tennis tournament.

In 2018, Alliance Ventures - the private equity fund of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, had invested in WeRide when the company was just celebrating one year of existence.
