ENVIRONMENTAL REPARATION

Environmental Reparation - Tailings Management

Tailings characteristics

Research from the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV) indicates that there are no restrictions on environmental regeneration nor on the development of economic activities based on waste.

The waste is non-toxic, being composed of elements that occur naturally in rocks and soil (Fe, Mn, Al), sand (silica) and water

Studies carried out in rural areas of

Mariana and Barra Longa do not represent a risk to human health

The waste was characterized as

Environmental Reparation - Biodiversity

Biodiversity Monitoring - Ongoing

Terrestrial

  • The terrestrial biodiversity inventory was completed in the first phase of monitoring (2019-2020). In this monitoring¹, no impacts directly related to the dam breach were identified. In the second phase of monitoring² (started in 2021), a new methodology was adopted to assess the impacts that still exist on terrestrial fauna and flora. Based on the monitoring, conservation actions were defined and there are currently 44 active actions in the Conservation of Terrestrial Biodiversity Plan that have been carried out by the Foundation.

Aquatic

  • The first year of implementing the planned actions for the recovery and conservation of aquatic biodiversity has been completed.
  • Publication of the Red Book of the Aquatic Biota of the Doce River Threatened with Post-Breach Extinction, providing a portrait of the aquatic biota¹ after 5 years of the breach. The assessment used the application of IUCN criteria and allowed the definition of conservation strategies that are being adopted in the PABA - Aquatic Biota Integrated Action Plan, which defined 50 actions that are being executed by Renova.

Monitoring is ongoing, involving several research and teaching institutions:
