Aetna (NYSE: AET) today announced new leadership in its Government and International businesses. Francis S. Soistman will lead Aetna Government Services and Richard di Benedetto will join the company as the head of Aetna International. Soistman and di Benedetto will report to Mark T. Bertolini, Aetna chairman, CEO and president, and will serve on the company's Executive Committee.

"The Government and International marketplaces represent significant long-term growth opportunities for Aetna and we are pleased to add two strong leaders to these growing businesses," said Bertolini. "Fran and Richard have a deep understanding of their respective marketplaces and the proven ability to drive sustainable growth."

Soistman has been leading Aetna's Medicare business, helping oversee the Medicare components of the Coventry Health Care acquisition as well as the 2014 Medicare bids for Aetna and Coventry. Prior to joining Aetna, Soistman was a co-founder of the health care management firm Jessamine Healthcare. He previously held leadership roles with Coventry Health Care, including head of the Individual Consumer and Government Business Division. Under his leadership, Coventry became one of the five largest Medicare Advantage and Part D plan sponsors in the nation. Soistman also served as senior vice president of Coventry Health Care and president and chief executive officer of HealthAmerica Pennsylvania, Inc. and HealthAssurance Pennsylvania, Inc.

Richard di Benedetto comes to Aetna from Euromedic International, where he served as CEO for one of the largest private medical services providers in Europe in the field of Diagnostics Services, Laboratories and Cancer Treatment. Euromedic operates 130 centers in 15 countries and employs more than 3,000 people. Prior to his role with Euromedic, di Benedetto spent 15 years with GE Healthcare. During his time with GE he held a variety of leadership roles with increasing responsibility, most recently serving as the president and CEO of its Eastern and Africa Growth Markets.

Kristi Matus, who has served as head of Government Services, and Sandip Patel, who has served as head of Aetna International, will be leaving the company. "Kristi and Sandip are respected leaders who have made significant contributions to Aetna," said Bertolini. "Under Kristi's leadership we have experienced growth across our Government businesses. Sandip has helped build a strong foundation for growth internationally and, thanks to his efforts, we are ready to take the next step in expanding our global footprint. We wish Kristi and Sandip well in their future endeavors."
