What: The annual Renew Our Rivers Smith Lake cleanup is Friday and Saturday, June 10-11. Volunteers should report each day at 8:30 a.m. to the Smith Lake boat ramp and wear long pants, boots and a long-sleeved shirt. Minors must have a chaperone or permission slip to participate. The cleanup will finish at 3:30 p.m. if weather permits. Lunch will be provided for volunteers.

This Renew Our Rivers cleanup is coordinated by Justin Dyar of Lake Homes Realty, Smith Lake Environmental Preservation Committee and Alabama Power's Shorelines.

Overview: Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast's largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program's inception in 2000. This year, 32 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

Directions: From Interstate-65 North: Take exit 305 and turn left onto Highway 222. Follow Highway 222 to Trimble and take a left at the four-way stop. There will be signs to the Smith Lake boat ramp in less than three blocks. Smith Lake will be on the right one mile down the road.
