Iowa American Water Now Accepting Applications for

2019 Environmental Grant Program

Since the program began in Iowa over a decade ago, over $76,000 in grants have been awarded to projects that improve, restore or protect local watersheds

DAVENPORT, IA (Feb. 22, 2019) - Iowa American Water announced today that it is now accepting applications for its 2019 Environmental Grant Program to support innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect watersheds and community drinking water supplies. The program supports diverse types of activities, such as watershed cleanups, reforestation efforts, biodiversity projects, streamside buffer restoration projects, wellhead protection initiatives and hazardous waste collection efforts.

"Our Environmental Grant Program has been very successful in helping local organizations carry out meaningful, sustainable initiatives that benefit our watersheds," said Randy Moore, president of Iowa American Water, "We encourage municipalities, schools, environmental organizations and civic groups to apply for a grant to support projects that will benefit a watershed in their community."

To qualify, proposed projects must be located in an Iowa American Water service area which includes Bettendorf, Blue Grass, Clinton, Davenport, Dixon, LeClaire, Panorama Park and Riverdale, Iowa and:

•  address a source water or watershed protection need in the community

•  be completed between May 1, 2019 and November 30, 2019

•  be a new or innovative program for the community, or serve as a significant expansion to an existing program

•  be carried out by a formal or informal partnership between two or more organizations

•  provide evidence of sustainability (continued existence after the Iowa American Water grant monies are utilized)

Grant awards will be judged on the program's innovation for the community, the partnership with other organizations and program sustainability.

IOWA AMERICAN WATER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 2019 ENVIRONMENTAL GRANT PROGRAM

In 2018, Iowa American Water issued four grants totaling $8,000 as follows:

• o River Action, Inc. was awarded a $2,800 grant for its Urban Revitalization project. River Action and proud partners constructed the alleyway found between Federal and Tremont Streets into a permeable alley to address nutrient runoff and urban flooding. As the first of its kind in Davenport, the project will act as a demonstration model for similar installations in the future to educate the community on the importance of best management practices.

• o Nahant Marsh Education Center was awarded $2,000 for its Clean Up and Bio Blitz program. Nahant Marsh hosted a Bio Blitz and three clean ups on a new 40-acre parcel. During the Bio Blitz, all species found were documented and at least 250 people educated. Volunteers also helped up clean up at least 500 tires and other items discarded into the wetland.

• o Keep Scott County Beautiful/Xstream Clean-Up was awarded $1,700 for its Xstream Water Sampling Team project. Beginning in spring 2018, the Xstream Water Sampling Team conducted water quality testing three times per year at 48 (or more) sites after the State of Iowa was unable to continue funding for the IOWATER program. The goal is to continue to obtain representative water quality data from area waterways and present this data in a meaningful format for communities, citizens and stakeholders, so that it can be used to improve service water quality which will in turn improve the quality of drinking water, increase viability for fish and other aquatic habitats and decrease flooding.

• o Clinton Substance Abuse Council/Gateway ImpACT Coalition was awarded $1,500 for its Clinton County Safe Medication Disposal Project.

  The effort seeks to raise awareness of the environmental and public health effects of improper medication storage and disposal in Clinton County through a youth led social marketing campaign and youth leadership training. The goal is to increase knowledge of and participation in the Medication Drop Box Program with non-senior citizens.
