WESTERLY, RI Nov. 21, 2019
- AMETEK SCP, a leader in highly reliable interconnect solutions, has selected BAE Systems Australia to support the development of a new defense capability for Australia's future Attack Class submarine fleet.
The companies have signed an agreement to develop Australian sovereign capabilities for high integrity inboard and outboard submarine hull penetrators and associated integrated systems.
AMETEK SCP is a world-leading manufacturer of bespoke submarine equipment and subsea systems. Under the agreement, AMETEK SCP will transfer important design, material science, and testing know-how to BAE Systems Australia to manufacture, sustain, update and upgrade equipment locally.
Submarine hull penetrators allow one or more cables to pass through the hull and connect to a variety of equipment located outside of the submarine without compromising safety, data, or system performance. AMETEK SCP has decades of experience engineering and designing hull penetrators and specialist cabling for the world's most advanced naval fleets. Access to this intellectual property is critical to enabling local Australian production of highly sophisticated submarine components.
BAE Systems Australia has more than 20 years of experience in manufacturing and sustaining submarine systems and equipment, including the periscopes on the current Collins Class submarines. The company will undertake the precision manufacturing and testing of the hull penetrators at its facilities in South Australia.
'We're delighted to bring future high skilled jobs to Australia,' said Liam Shanahan, Business Unit Vice President of AMETEK SCP. 'The combination of our most advanced technology along with the country's skilled workforce and industrial base will provide a key sovereign capability for Australia to upgrade and support the safety of their submariners for years to come.''
'This partnership enables the development of world-leading capabilities in Australia to support the Royal Australian Navy's future submarines,' said Andrew Gresham, BAE Systems Australia, Managing Director of Defense Delivery. 'This partnership combines our company's world-leading, advanced manufacturing capabilities with the expertise we've developed after more than two decades supporting periscopes and various platform systems on the Collins Class submarine.'
