SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) _ Autodesk Inc. (ADSK) on Wednesday reported fiscal first-quarter net income of $66.5 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the San Rafael, California-based company said it had profit of 30 cents. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 85 cents per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 10 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 81 cents per share.

The design software company posted revenue of $885.7 million in the period, also beating Street forecasts. Eight analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $874.6 million.

For the current quarter ending in August, Autodesk expects its per-share earnings to range from 86 cents to 92 cents.

The company said it expects revenue in the range of $890 million to $905 million for the fiscal second quarter. Analysts surveyed by Zacks had expected revenue of $896.9 million.

Autodesk expects full-year earnings in the range of $3.52 to $3.90 per share, with revenue ranging from $3.68 billion to $3.78 billion.

Autodesk shares have increased almost 9% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has dropped 6%. In the final minutes of trading on Wednesday, shares hit $199.81, a climb of 24% in the last 12 months.
