Spokane, Wash. - July 30, 2013: Avista invites the public to an open house from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, in celebration of 30 years of generating renewable energy at theKettle Falls Generating Station. The address is 1151 U.S. Hwy 395 North, Kettle Falls, Wash.

Built in 1983, the Kettle Falls plant was the first utility-owned electric generating station of its kind in the U.S. constructed for the sole purpose of producing electricity from wood waste, or biomass. The award-winning plant, combined with Avista's legacy hydroelectric power projects, has contributed to Avista being one of the greenest utilities in the country.

With the passage of I-937 in 2006, Washington state voters approved the Energy Independence Act, which requires large utilities to obtain 15 percent of their electricity from renewable resources by 2020, excluding hydropower. Kettle Falls will help Avista meet its I-937 goals beginning in 2016. With the support of legislators, the community and Avista employees, the Kettle Falls Generating Station is well positioned to be a part of the region's clean energy future.

"Kettle Falls stands as a tribute to a unique partnership forged 30 years ago between Avista, timber and forestry organizations, and the communities of northeastern Washington," said Jason Thackston, Avista's vice president for energy resources. "The plant represents our focus on shared value, where our legacy of innovation intersects with the needs of the people we serve to create successful outcomes."

A number of special guests are scheduled to attend the open house, including U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, State Senator John Smith and State Representatives Shelly Short and Joel Kretz.
