A group of scientists from the Avon Innovation Centre in Suffern, New York, inspire children to pursue a career in science by running 'The Chemist's Apprentice' workshops - to see real science in action - at the prestigious World Science Festival.

As a global brand with a 130-year heritage in breakthrough innovation, Avon shared some of its knowledge, passion and expertise with the next generation of budding scientists for the second consecutive year at the week-long event in New York, which during its 10-year history, has drawn over 2.9 million visitors.

On an agenda alongside the world's best explorers, scientists and performers, the team from the labs in Suffern ran a workshop called The Chemist's Apprentice, which allowed the children to see how science is integral to everyday life. They learned about polymer science and experienced being a chemist themselves in an experiment using the scientific method to determine the right formula for hair gel and then made their own. They applied the knowledge to make their own hair gel.

The event, hailed a 'new cultural institution' by the New York Times, is a production of the World Science Foundation and its mission is to inspire the public with wonder and understand the value of science and its implications for the future. Avon's renowned R&D pedigree and quest to make top quality innovation accessible to everyone means it's committed to playing a part in developing a passion for science in the experts of the future.Talented Avon chemists Christopher Wolyniak, Shannon Louie, Liz Knapp and Gloria Huang ran the workshops, and all expressed their pride at taking part in this inspiring event.

'I'm so proud of the members of the team who participated and not only inspired the children taking part in their workshops with their passion and energy but also demonstrated Avon's commitment to being at the forefront of science. A passion for science comes naturally but we all need some inspiration, mentoring and support along the way to reach our potential and I'm delighted that Avon gets to play a part in that journey for the next generation of young scientists.'

Vice President R&D at Avon, Lisa Gallo

'We are thrilled to offer an exciting line-up of programming, with leaders in their fields engaging the public in conversations that encourage all to be champions of scientific truth and human curiosity.'

Tracy Day, Co-Founder and CEO of the World Science Festival
