Tokyo stocks dropped Wednesday as investors moved to lock in gains after the Nikkei index ended at a new 14-month high the previous day while awaiting the outcome of the Bank of Japan's policy meeting due out the next day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 131.69 points, or 0.55 percent, from Tuesday at 23,934.43. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 8.80 points, or 0.50 percent, lower at 1,738.40.

Decliners were led by marine transportation, machinery and pharmaceutical issues.
