Barrick Gold Corporation (GOLD) said Friday it began a certification process for gender equality at the Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic earlier in the week.
Barrick said the move supports U.N. Sustainable Development Goals and the Dominican Strategy Development Law as it will reduce gender salary differences, increase employment of women and promote the participation of women in leadership positions.
"At Barrick we believe in a diverse and inclusive working environment regardless of gender and this initiative will continue the good work we have already done in this area of our business," Barrick president and chief executive Mark Bristow said.
Pueblo Viejo is a joint venture between Barrick, which holds a 60% stake, and Newmont Goldcorp.
