Gemma Brinckman was looking for a new challenge when she applied for a job with BHP's Operations Services (OS). By chance, she came across a job advertisement for a Production Technician role and soon found herself on the other side of the country in Western Australia's Pilbara.

'I was really inspired after attending my first engagement centre in Brisbane,' Gemma said.

'I got a very clear picture about the role and the company, and I was 'wowed' by how positive and motivated everyone was.'

Prior to joining the OS Yandi team, Gemma was working with her dad at his cabinet-making business, having just returned from two years working at ski resorts and summer camps in Canada.

'I was eager to start a new career and I was really interested in the resources industry, but as a 'greeny' I wasn't sure how I could get a foot in the door,' Gemma said.

'The OS Mastery Program stuck out to me as, being someone who hadn't been onsite before, I thought the regular in-field coaching would really kick start my career and give me the chance to grow and develop as a leader.'

Swapping Brisbane for the Pilbara has been a big change, but a decision that Gemma is glad she made.

'Not many people can say they work in the beautiful Pilbara - I love being away from the big smoke and experiencing a change of pace,' Gemma said.

'As a Production Technician every day is different. One day I could be operating haul trucks and water carts, and the next I could be working with my crew changing out delineation - it's about having the opportunity to become competent and trained on a variety of equipment.'

'As there are deployments all around Australia, I know that I have the opportunity to one day make another city home or even go back to the East Coast - I feel like I have a lot of opportunities.'

While Gemma enjoys her role and new home, she says the best part of her job is the people.

'Having a great crew and support system makes the job all that much better.'

'I didn't really have any expectations when I joined the industry but there's a real sense of comradery and family. I'd encourage anyone - not matter what your background is - to give it a go!'
