DENVER (AP) _ Bonanza Creek Energy Inc. (BCEI) on Thursday reported first-quarter net income of $78.6 million, after reporting a loss in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Denver-based company said it had net income of $3.80. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, were $1.02 per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 97 cents per share.

The oil and gas company posted revenue of $60.4 million in the period, which did not meet Street forecasts. Four analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $66.1 million.

Bonanza Creek shares have fallen 27% since the beginning of the year. The stock has dropped 25% in the last 12 months.
