Calix : Factors of Success in Millimeter Wave Fixed Wireless Access

There is no shortage of interest in 5G to provide fixed wireless access (FWA). Verizon's 5G Home was the first 5G broadband service offering from the big US mobile network operators (MNO), but all four (or five, depending on how you count) are planning to offer fixed broadband service to complement their core mobile service business line.

The 5G spotlight shines brightest on millimeter wave solutions that promise up to 1 Gbps broadband service to those within range of the 5G small cell; and the big MNOs are not the only operators excited about using millimeter wave technology. Similar systems used by the MNOs for 5G mobile networks can also be used by telco and cable service providers that want to edge out from their fiber plant, overbuild a competitor's copper networks, or address MDUs more effectively.

There is plenty of interest, but even more opinions on what it will take to be successful in this millimeter wave FWA endeavor.
