OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK) on Monday reported a loss of $8.3 billion in its first quarter.

On a per-share basis, the Oklahoma City-based company said it had a loss of $852.97. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were $14.87 per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of seven analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of $16.43 per share.

The natural gas company posted revenue of $2.54 billion in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $1.8 billion.

Chesapeake shares have declined 94% since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has fallen almost 10%. The stock has dropped 98% in the last 12 months.
