DOVER, DE -- With the heating season upon us, Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (NYSE: CPK) (Chesapeake Utilities) wants to remind its natural gas and propane customers of gas safety tips provided in the Company's customer guide. The Company recently distributed the guide to its customers throughout the Delmarva Peninsula.

"Chesapeake Utilities cares about the communities we serve and we are committed to delivering clean energy to our customers in a safe and reliable manner," said Shane Breakie, Vice President of Chesapeake Utilities. "As we prepare our systems for winter, we want to make sure our customers take recommended safety steps as well. We also remind our customers to take simple energy efficiency steps such as lowering your heating thermostat a few degrees, using medium or low flames when cooking or lowering your water heater to 120 degrees to help save money."

The customer guide also reminds customers to call Miss Utility, a free utility location service reached by dialing 811, at least 48 hours prior to digging underground near your home. This ensures that gas and other public utility lines are located and their locations are marked prior to excavation to avoid damage.

If you smell gas or suspect you have a gas leak:

Leave the building or area immediately. Once you are in a safe location, call Chesapeake Utilities at 800.427.2883 or Sandpiper Energy at 800.427.0015.

Extinguish all open flames. Do not use matches or lighters. Do not turn appliances or lights on or off.

Do not use any phones, appliance controls or battery operated equipment, which can ignite natural gas.

Do not start or turn off vehicles or motorized equipment.

Do not attempt to find the source of the leak.

Chesapeake is committed to fostering a culture of safety for our employees, customers and the communities we serve.
