In response to the class suspension of schools during the coronavirus outbreak, CLP Power Hong Kong Limited (CLP Power) has made available a series of free online education materials to allow teachers from primary schools and kindergartens to conduct online lessons and pupils studying at home to continue to learn about environmental protection and electricity.

The online education series for kindergartens cover three topics - energy saving, power safety, and electricity - through audible story books, cartoons, songs, and online games contained in the POWER YOU Kindergarten Education Kit. Teachers and parents can access the materials through the Power Kid Facebook page, or the Power Kid mobile app to teach children knowledge on energy saving, electrical safety, and power generation at home.

For primary schools, CLP Power provides online education materials covering 10 topics, to 85 primary schools under the Green Elites Campus Accreditation Programme. The materials cover energy consumption, energy saving, our ecological footprint, and nature conservation which tie in with schools' General Studies coursework. All pupils can take part in challenges by completing green missions and online games through the Green Elites Portal (https://www.clp.com.hk/greenelites), strengthening their knowledge about the environmental impact of clothing, eating, modern lifestyles, and travelling. They can also learn how to make upcycled products out of waste material while classes are suspended.

CLP Power Chief Corporate Development Officer Ms Quince Chong said: 'We have consolidated the teaching materials from our green education initiatives and turned them into an online learning series, helping teachers to carry out online teaching and enabling pupils to continue learning about environmental protection knowledge and to discover how to adopt low-carbon lifestyles while staying at home.'

Separately, 18 Sheng Kung Hui (SKH) primary schools which took part in the 2018/19 Green Elites Campus Accreditation Programme have been awarded Green Elites Campus accreditation in recognition of their efforts to promote environmental education. Three schools received the Most Outstanding Award for their exceptional performances. They organised creative activities, including rewriting songs with green messages, building a 'green road' using eco-bricks made of used glass bottles, and upcycling old chairs. Four other schools received the Energy Saving Award for making significant energy savings on campus.

CLP Power is committed to promoting environmental education, from kindergartens to universities. The Green Elites Campus Accreditation Programme aims to promote energy saving and conservation in primary schools. In the 2019/20 academic year, 16 primary schools under the Catholic Education Office are participating in the programme. CLP Power works with Friends of the Earth (HK), Green Power, The Green Earth, and the Hong Kong Observatory to provide diverse green education activities for more than 10,000 students through the programme.
