The international bidding, which was launched in December 2018, plans to purchase 18 new light-rail trains and provide 5 years of maintenance services. It aims at expanding public transportation and improving travel services.

In an interview with Lusa - Portuguese News Agency (LUSA), Tiago Braga, president of Porto Metro in Portugal, said Porto Metro needed to complete the quantity purchased in order to cope with a possible increase of more than six million passengers in the current year.

The core of Porto Metro's order for this batch of trains is to meet the needs of existing local subway traffic growth, and it intends to further expand subway network, mainly new rose line and yellow line that is about to extend. It is expected that the local subway network will be extended by six kilometers, and seven additional stations will be set with a total investment of 300 million Euros. Delivery of new compartments will be completed between 2021 and 2023.
