MIDLAND, Texas (AP) _ Diamondback Energy Inc. (FANG) on Monday reported a second-quarter loss of $2.39 billion, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.

On a per-share basis, the Midland, Texas-based company said it had a loss of $15.17. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs, were 15 cents per share.

The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 14 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 3 cents per share.

The energy exploration and production company posted revenue of $425 million in the period, which did not meet Street forecasts. Ten analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $600.6 million.

Diamondback shares have decreased 57% since the beginning of the year. In the final minutes of trading on Monday, shares hit $40.19, a fall of 59% in the last 12 months.
