Feb. 12--ROCKFORD -- A four-hour standoff ended about 12:45 a.m. Monday after a police dog found a man accused of robbing the Dollar Tree at 6340 E. State St. hiding in a loft at the store.
The man -- Stanley Turner, 36, of Rockford -- was charged with armed robbery, unlawful use of weapons by a felon, aggravated battery to a senior citizen and unlawful restraint, Rockford Police Department said.
Officers responded around 9 p.m. to a possible robbery in progress. They found that Turner grabbed two women employees -- one who was older than 60 years -- and pushed them to the back of the store. The employees managed to exit the story when officers arrived. They were not hurt.
Early on, one of the officers looked through the store window and saw the suspect, who he thought to be holding a gun, "run toward the back of the store when he saw the officers," Kevin Ogden, assistant deputy chief, said late Sunday.
Several phone calls to the store went unanswered, or the line was hung up immediately after being answered.
The suspect remained inside the business, armed with a handgun, police said. After many attempts to make contact with the suspect, the dog found Turner, who was taken into custody without further incident. Officers recovered a handgun along with stolen cash from the business.
Squad cars blocked several entrances to the large parking lot, which is shared with PetSmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and Schnucks, among other businesses.
Turner was taken to Winnebago County Jail.
