Under the heading 'e-xperience mobility,' ElringKlinger will be unveiling several new products centered around battery and technology, electric drive units, and lightweight plastics at the 67th International Motor Show (IAA) for Commercial Vehicles from September 20 to 27, 2018 (Hall 17, Booth B12). The solutions showcased at the event are particularly versatile in that they are not restricted to a specific type of drive system. ElringKlinger's presentation for visitors to the IAA will include a show truck, demonstrating the company's skillset when it comes to end-to-end battery and fuel cell systems as well as electric drive units and showing exactly where its products are located in the vehicle.

'The automotive industry as a whole is also facing tremendous challenges in the commercial vehicle market. The aim must be to strike a balance between the old world and the new world. Our company is already on the right track and we are delighted to be able to present to IAA visitors our wide-ranging solutions for commercial vehicles,' says Dr. Stefan Wolf, CEO of ElringKlinger AG.

stack with 260 cells for integration into vehicle systems
Drawing on many years of experience when it comes to fully automated series production in the areas of metalworking, plastic injection molding and joining/coating technology as well as automated assembly processes and in-house tool and mold making capabilities, ElringKlinger has established itself as a high-caliber partner for the efficient manufacture of fuel cell products in large quantities. This expertise will also be on show at the IAA - in the form of two PEM stacks containing 260 cells. Featuring metallic , they have an output of 115.4 kWel and can be integrated into the vehicle system as a fuel cell/battery hybrid system or as a range extender. The stacks are already being used in forklift trucks with a reduced number of cells.

Complete battery system from a single source
Another highlight are energy storage systems for mobile applications in the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) segment. The battery system is made up of cell modules consisting of prismatic lithium-ion cells and stores around 40 kWh of electrical energy at a nominal voltage of 400 V. The battery housing can be adapted to the installation footprint. Integrated cooling of the battery modules ensures best-in-class performance. Additionally, functional elements such as gaskets, cable routing, and pressure equalization elements can be easily incorporated. Last but not least, crash standards applicable to this market have been met in full.

E-axle from ElringKlinger and hofer powertrain
Bringing together the engineering skills of hofer powertrain - a specialist in the field of electric drive technology - and its own long-standing expertise within the area of battery technology and fuel cells, ElringKlinger has further cemented its systems competency for pioneering drive technologies. The first solutions from this partnership will be presented at the IAA.
They include a compact axially parallel electric drive unit (EDU) that can be integrated into various vehicle platforms. Power is transmitted to the half-shaft via a two-stage spur gear and a differential. While hofer powertrain applies its expertise to development and system design, ElringKlinger concentrates on serial production.

Lightweight solutions for combustion engines and electric motors
Lightweight engineering also plays a pivotal role in the commercial vehicle sector, as downweighting translates into lower fuel consumption and a reduction in harmful emissions. Increasingly, another aspect is gaining prominence: lightweighting makes alternative drives even more effective, as lower vehicle weight means extended battery range.

The ElringKlinger show truck features a number of lightweight solutions. They include a cockpit cross-vehicle beam that carries the dashboard, steering column, heating and ventilation modules, airbags, glove compartment, center console, and other features; its ensures that all components are securely connected to the vehicle body. Even in its standard design a newly developed seat structure that incorporates positioning motors, airbags, and the lordosis and head rest offers a versatile spring element, enhancement options for lateral support, and many other functional features. In addition to offering significant weight-saving potential and the integration of additional functions, the seat structure also meets exacting crash standards.

Established portfolio for modern combustion engines
Additionally, ElringKlinger will be presenting a number of components from its long-standing portfolio of products. They include cylinder-head and specialty gaskets as well as shielding systems for temperature and acoustics management, in addition to other products.
