Enel SpA said Wednesday that it has been included in the MSCI ESG Leaders Indexes for the first time.

The Rome-based energy company said the inclusion comes after ESG research-and-index provider MSCI Inc. conducted an annual review of its sustainability indexes.

"All of our operations and investment decisions are guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with special emphasis on emission-free generation and highly efficient energy solutions promoting cleaner and more sustainable energy models," said Enel Chief Executive Francesco Starace.

Enel said socially responsible investors had a combined stake of about 10.8% in its share capital in 2019, nearly double from 2014 levels.
