Press release

Hanau/Düsseldorf, Germany. On German Sustainability Day, Evonik received certification of the recently prepared EPD for its CALOSTAT® non-combustible high-performance insulation material from Hans Peters, chairman of the Management Board of the Institut für Bauen und Umwelt (IBU), an association of building product manufacturers in Germany. The EPD takes into account the entire production process, from manufacture of precursors, their transport, production of CALOSTAT® and the option of recycling the material. The EPD will be published on the website of the IBU and may also be downloaded from www.calostat.com very soon.

Using the EPD, building owners and planners can quickly see the advantages of CALOSTAT® for their building projects and assess, for example, the positive impact on DGNB, BREEAM or LEED building certifications and any associated state subsidies. 'CALOSTAT® is a purely mineral material, contains no toxic substances, has a very long design life, and is recyclable,' says Dr. Bettina Gerharz-Kalte, vice president of Thermal Insulation at Evonik, of the special ecological properties of the material. 'With CALOSTAT® we've launched one of the most sustainable insulating materials on the market-and the only one holding the Material Health Certificate and the Cradle to Cradle Certificate of the Product Innovation Institute in Gold as well as an EPD with recycling option.'

The systematic description of environmental performance in the EPD is based on life cycle assessment in accordance with ISO 14040, an internationally recognised scientific method of analysing the environmental performance of a product.
All the substance streams associated with a product, from raw material acquisition to disposal, are included under prescribed rules known as Product Category Rules for the research and the data to be declared.

Evonik will also be presenting CALOSTAT® at stand A1.415 at BAU 2019 in Munich between January 14 and 19, 2019. Here the Evonik team will show in applications such as roofs, facades and ceilings how CALOSTAT® can combine insulation with fire protection.
