Gartner, Inc. has released the results of its annual European Supply Chain Top 15, identifying supply chain leaders and highlighting their best practices. Analysts announced the results at the Gartner Supply Chain Executive Conference in Barcelona.

'Europe-based supply chain organizations continue to build on their strong performance in 2019, demonstrating exemplary demand-driven leadership and corporate social responsibility (CSR),' said Micheal Youssef, senior research director at Gartner. 'Beyond profit, leading companies focused on people and protecting the planet, with nine out of the 15 companies achieving a perfect 10 in the CSR category.'

Having attained top-five scores for seven successive years, Unilever became the first European-headquartered company to enter the 'Masters' category*, which Gartner introduced in 2015 to highlight the accomplishments and capabilities of long-term leaders over the last 10 years.

Unilever continues to lead by example, with strong digital supply chain processes and operations, including leveraging automation, data science and machine learning. Its leading position reflects a strong supply chain brand, solid financials and a perfect 10 on its CSR component score.

In the European Supply Chain list, Inditex scored the top spot (and No. 2 on the global list), followed by Nestlé, Schneider Electric, Diageo and L'Oréal (see Table 1.) There were two new entrants this year: Dutch chemical company AkzoNobel at No. 10 and Swiss life sciences company Roche at No. 14. Overall, eight companies improved their ranking and 12 European companies made it to the Gartner Global Supply Chain Top 25 in 2019, up from 11 in 2018 and 10 in 2017.

The top three trends emerging across leading European supply chains that are accelerating supply chain capabilities are:

Personalization at Scale -In the last year, leaders have sharpened their focus on improving customer experience with personalization. 'Tailoring products and services to individual customer's needs is nothing new for supply chain,' said Mr. Youssef. 'However, personalization at scale is a key differentiator for more advanced companies, and requires a higher level of agility, supply chain flexibility and underlying technological capability in order to pull it off.'

Leveraging Ecosystems - Leaders of large corporate supply chains face new challenges, such as fostering local talent for advanced skills and minimizing plastic waste creation and ocean pollution.

They recognize problems of this scale can only be tackled by working in collaboration with an ecosystem of external partners. These partnerships will include groups that may involve traditional competitors, governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), academia, startups and solution providers.

Driving Business-Led DigitalStrategies - Companies at the top of the European Supply Chain are returning to business-led digital transformation. These companies are investing in digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced analytics to elevate the operational and customer-facing function within their supply chains. They are also using digital twins and augmented reality (AR) to enable supply chain operators to run experiments on factory lines and explore solutions to equipment problems in a virtual setting before taking action in the physical world.
