TSX edges down as lower gold prices weigh on material shares

(Reuters) - Canada's main stock index marginally fell on Thursday, led by declines in shares of material companies on the back of lower gold prices.

* At 9:55 a.m. ET (13:55 GMT), the Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index edged down 8.3 points, or 0.05 percent, to 16,130.63.

* Seven of the index's 11 major sectors were lower, led by the materials sector, which fell more than 1 percent as gold prices slipped.

* The financials sector and industrials sector marginally fell, while the information technology sector edged down more than 0.3 percent.

* The energy rose 0.3 percent as oil prices hit four-month highs.

* On the TSX, 84 issues were higher, while 151 issues declined for a 1.80-to-1 ratio to the downside, with traded volume touching 30.43 million shares.

* The largest percentage gainer on the TSX was Birchcliff Energy, which rose 4.8 percent, after brokerage BMP raised their price target on the stock.

* Alamos Gold fell 4.7 percent, the most on the TSX, in line with other gold miners tracking lower gold prices.

* The most heavily traded shares by volume were Aurora Cannabis Inc, Hexo Corp and Bombardier Inc.

* The TSX posted 6 new 52-week highs and no new low.

* Across all Canadian issues, there were 24 new 52-week highs and two new lows, with total volume touching 46.86 million shares.
