Ghana recognised for local procurement

Monday, 30 September 2019

The good work of our team in Ghana to promote local procurement recently received high-profile recognition at the 2019 Ghana Procurement and Supply Chain Awards.

We won the following awards:

  • Excellence in Procurement and Supply Chain: Mining (2nd year running
  • Local Content Award (Gold)
  • Procurement and Supply Chain Team of the Year (Bronze)

Our head of Supply Chain for the Region, Theophilus Otchere, was also recognised as one of Ghana's Top 20 Procurement Leaders.

Sourcing goods and services from suppliers in our host community is a management priority at all our operations. While about 90% of our goods and services come from suppliers in our country of operations, our aim is to increase the percentage of this sourced from enterprises in our host communities.

Our Ghana team has done particularly well - about a third of all the goods and services they require are supplied by companies based in our host communities at Damang and Tarkwa. That means about US$220m flows back to these communities in terms of procurement spend.

Our target across the company is to source between 23% and 25% of our procurement from host communities. In 2018 we achieved 27% host community procurement - almost US$500m at all our operations.
