This Saturday, 15 September, there will be a safety exercise at the HHLA Container Terminal Burchardkai (CTB) between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Approximately 150 emergency personnel and helpers will be involved, among them fire and rescue services, police officers and employees of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA). The safety exercise might be visible from the northern bank of the river Elbe. To create the most realistic scenario possible, emergency vehicles equipped with blue lights and sirens will enter the terminal; theatrical smoke will also be in use. As a precaution, HHLA emphasises that this is a drill, and that the population of Hamburg is in absolutely no danger.

Emergency services train regularly for a variety of emergency situations at the terminals of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG. This ensures that, in a real emergency, all forces involved will be optimally prepared, thus minimising possible impacts on employees, the surrounding population and the environment.

The safety exercise this Saturday will take place as part of the HAZARD project, which is supported by the European Union. Its goal is to improve safety in European ports. Increased operational readiness and responsiveness as well as clear communication in an emergency are essential elements of HAZARD. In addition, miscellaneous equipment for the containment of various incidents will be tested. For this purpose, 20 HAZARD monitors from five European countries will be present at the CTB. Operations at CTB will not be impaired by the exercise.
