Cheste, Spain, Nov 17 (EFE).- Nobody was able to hinder Spaniard Marc Márquez on Sunday as he stormed to victory in the Valencia Grand Prix, sealing his 12th victory of the season at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in a race that doubled up as a farewell run for his teammate and fellow countryman Jorge Lorenzo.

The Repsol Honda rider had a wobbly start but kept his patience to jump up the positions, closing in on the early leader, Frenchman Fabio Quartarato (Yamaha).

After watching him closely for about two laps, he delivered a final blow in lap 8. The race was already won.

While for Márquez the win was a cause for celebration, Lorenzo had to bid farewell, cheered on by his former team at Ducati and then Honda as he came off the track.

Márquez's victory and Lorenzo's 13th spot in Valencia mathematically hand the team title to Repsol Honda, a crown they had fought toe-to-toe over with Ducati's Andrea Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci, who took a spill in Valencia.

Ducati's Jack Miller tried to take Quartararo at the start but the Frenchman recovered first place by the second corner of lap 1.

Márquez languished in sixth to begin with and only jumped Maverick Viñales to get into fifth at the end of lap 1.

The Spaniard was second just one lap later and so began closing the gap Quartararo had managed to open up.

By lap 6, Márquez was on the Frenchman's tail and started marking him closely to judge the best moment to overtake.

Repsol Honda thus walks away with the triple crown this year, winning individual, team and manufacturer categories.

Márquez is now a six-time world champion in MotoGP and this year alone has made pole position in every Grand Prix he contested in, coming first in Argentina, Spain, France, Catalonia, Germany, the Czech Republic, San Marino, Aragon, Thailand, Japan, Australia and Valencia.

"Marc Márquez, statistically, the greatest single season in MotoGP history," MotoGP tweeted.

The race in eastern Spain on Sunday gave MotoGP fans a chance to watch Honda's other Spanish rider and five-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo race competitively for the last time after he announced his retirement from the sport earlier this week.

"Jorge Lorenzo's astonishing career comes to an end. One of the greatest ever to grace this beautiful sport with his talent," MotoGP said.
