BOSTON, April 2, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Learning company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt today announced that the Virginia State Board of Education has approved its new next-generation literacy programs, HMH Into Reading™ Virginia ©2020 for grades K-5, and HMH Into Literature™ Virginia ©2020  for grades 6-12, which are both fully aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework. The programs are part of HMH's Into Learning suite, a series of fully-integrated core solutions rooted in learning science that combine teacher support, data driven instructional practices and focused content architecture to help students reach their fullest potential.

Into Reading and Into Literature offer a flexible and balanced approach to literacy, featuring a design that weaves together actionable data analytics, a streamlined approach to formative assessment, ongoing blended professional learning opportunities and rich, current content to encourage critical thinking. Built to honor and support the essential teacher-student relationship, the programs address the growing demands teachers face to demonstrate positive outcomes while simultaneously addressing the varied needs of their students.

"We consulted with teachers across Virginia to hear about their unique obstacles and challenges, and what we learned helped to inform the development of these new next-generation literacy solutions that provide a truly customized experience for Virginia educators," said Jim O'Neill, general manager, Core Solutions, HMH. "We look forward to partnering with districts statewide to implement Into Reading Virginia and Into Literature Virginia and supporting teachers in fostering a classroom culture of learning and growth that encourages students to reach their full academic potential."

An esteemed group of experts, thought leaders, scholars and researchers applied their decades of experience and expertise to the development of Into Reading and Into Literature. Authors and consultants include Kylene Beers, Ed.D, past president of the National Council of Teachers, and Bob Probst, Ph.D., national literacy consultant and Professor Emeritus at Georgia State University, both of whom were keynote speakers at the 2019 Virginia State Reading Association conference in March.

HMH's Virginia literary offerings include:

  • HMH Into Reading™ Virginia ©2020 (Grades K-5) provides rigorous instruction that establishes a foundation for literacy beginning at kindergarten, and the five pillars of reading development—Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary and Comprehension—are continually supported throughout the program. Embedded Learning Mindset strategies, individual goal setting, and progress monitoring promote social-emotional growth among students. Into Reading supports teachers as they implement the Virginia Standards of Learning and Curriculum Framework, with correlations directly embedded into the Virginia Teacher's Guide and Virginia Writing Workshop Teacher's Guide.
  • HMH Into Literature™ Virginia ©2020 (Grades 6-12) meets the Virginia 5 C's—critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration and citizenship—and prepares students for success. Proficiency reports aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning provide visibility into each student's mastery level, and embedded "Notice and Note" strategies prompt students to dig deeper into texts, annotate, infer meaning, and apply that insight to the world around them. A comprehensive Virginia's Teacher's Guide offers fully customizable lessons that speak to unique classroom needs, and the program's integrated online platform streamlines planning, teaching, assessing, and differentiating—all from one interface.
