HP Inc. Wednesday said it has set a new goal to eliminate 75% of single-use plastic packaging by 2025 as it works to reduce its environmental footprint.

The Palo Alto, Calif., technology company said the new goal focuses on hardware unit packaging and is predicated on a move to molded fiber packaging cushions.

HP said that as part of its environmental packaging strategy, it has shifted to more recyclable, paper-based alternatives. The company said it is transitioning from plastic foam packaging cushions to those made with 100% recycled, molded pulp for notebooks, desktops and displays.

HP said the shift to molded fiber personal-systems packaging cushions eliminated 933 metric tons of hard-to-recycle expanded plastic foam last year.

HP said it is also accelerating its use of recycled content plastics. The company said it used more than 25,000 metric tons of post-consumer recycled content plastic in its print and personal-systems products last year, equivalent to 9% of plastics used, and that it is working to increase this to 30% by 2025.
