Infoworks, a self-driving mobility sensor manufacturer, announced that it would start developing the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology, which is a sensor for self-driving vehicles, in collaboration with Hyundai Motors.

The FMCW LiDAR under development is a sensor that measures the distance of an object with a laser and models its surroundings with precise 3D images. It is also expected to overcome the limitations of the existing Pulse LiDAR as the FMCW is able to detect objects, with its high reception rates even in the strong sunlight of 80,000Lux, and 99% concentration of smoke/fog and snow/rain. Due to low signal interference between LiDAR sensors, The FMCW also has another advantage to address concerns that object recognition errors may be caused by interference phenomena that may occur due to the increase in the number of self-driving cars equipped with LiDAR sensors.

Thanks to its functions and advantages, it is expected that the FMCW LiDAR will be applied to various sectors in the fourth industrial revolution, such as self-driving cars, robot taxis, robots and drones in the future. This sparked a global interest in the technology, which results in numerous automobile and LiDAR sensor manufacturers paying attention to the development of coherent FMCW LiDAR. As an example of this trend, Blackmore, an American FMCW LiDAR manufacturer, was sold to the self-driving vehicle company Aurora, for 5.5 billion USD in 2019, and Hyundai Motors is known to apply LiDAR to its next flagship sedan, G90.

Meanwhile, in Korea, Infoworks is leading the industry by developing coherent FMCW LiDAR for the first time in Korea and the second in the World in 2019. The technology, which was highly evaluated, led the cooperation with Hyundai Motors.
