Implenia wins order for four-track expansion of SBB's railway station in Liestal - Track and platform expansion plus other works | Contract worth around CHF 115 million

Dietlikon, 3 June 2019 - Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) has commissioned Implenia to expand capacity at its Liestal station to four tracks. The SBB is adding the extra tracks to avoid congestion, reduce disruption and improve the punctuality of the train service. The overall 380-million-franc expansion package also covers the turning track project, which is a prerequisite for the quarter-hourly S-Bahn service between Basel and Liestal. The contract is worth around EUR 115 million.

In addition to the four-track expansion and associated track connections, the package also includes alterations to the over- and underpasses and retaining walls, as well as platform extensions, a car park and other works. Changes are also being made to structures around the project perimeter owned by other bodies, including cantonal and town transport infrastructure. Work begins in summer 2019 and should last until 2025.

Implenia has proven its expertise in rail construction on many occasions, including the expansion of Zurich Oerlikon train station and the work it did on the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
