Jan. 12--Newburgh Free Academy P-TECH graduate Suriana Rodriguez was featured at a national tech conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

Rodriguez was in the P-TECH program's first graduating class in June. Those 17 students simultaneously earned their associate's degree from SUNY Orange and high school diploma from NFA.

Most of the P-TECH students have a mentor and complete at least one internship in the tech field through the program's partnership with IBM, according to a news release from the Newburgh city school district.

Rodriguez began working over the summer for IBM Poughkeepsie as an electronics lab tech apprentice.

The Consumer Technology Association's forum, called Consumer Electronics Show, claims to be the global stage for innovation. About 182,000 people from 150 countries and 4,400 exhibiting companies attended this year's conference in Las Vegas, according to the CES website.

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty, this year's keynote speaker, asked Rodriguez on stage to tell the audience her story.

Rodriguez spoke briefly about how she arrived in the U.S. as an immigrant, when she was 6 years old, and of her experience in the P-TECH program.

"She's one of our great graduates out of the first school that did that and has made a great contribution," Rometty said at the conference.
