The Jerónimo Martins Group has made the strategic decision to hire electricity 100% from renewable sources to meet the needs of its banners in Portugal: Pingo Doce, Recheio, Hussel and Jeronymo.

Given the strong correlation between the use of fossil fuels and climate change - and these being one of the three pillars of the Group's Environmental Policy -, opting to use electricity from renewable sources will help eliminate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from energy consumption. These emissions, which, in 2017, accounted for an equivalent of approximately 190 thousand tonnes of CO2, until now, had the highest relative weight in the Group's carbon footprint in Portugal.

Pedro Soares dos Santos, CEO and Chairman of the Board of the Jerónimo Martins Group, states: 'This decision reflects the Group's firm commitment to sustainable growth, even when it means - as is the case - significantly higher costs. Climate change and the extreme weather events and natural disasters that come with it are three of the five major global risks identified by the World Economic Forum in 2018. We cannot just sit idly by. We must take action.'
