K-Electric, in collaboration with the Electric Inspectorate Karachi (EIK) and the support of local law enforcement, launched an operation against generator mafia in Lines Area. More than 100 illegal connections were removed in the joint operation which was conducted in the areas near Chotu Ground and Usmania Masjid and its surroundings. A network of 90 KVA and 45 KVA generators was unearthed which were being used to provide electricity to more than 100 residential and commercial properties. EIK officials issued a warning to the owners of the generators and initial reports based on the findings were also filed. It is expected that more such combined actions against the generator mafia will be taken in the coming days. According to available information generator mafia is supplying electricity in this unsafe manner in various parts of Karachi, which is not only illegal but extremely hazardous for area residents. The power utility has been in contact with the EIK and other relevant stakeholders, informing them about the presence of this mafia in the city, it has been learnt. This illicit action on the part of the generator mafia, supplying electricity to residents through these illegal networks is also the underlying cause of serious accidents and is a constant threat to public safety. In the letter, it was also mentioned that the provision of electricity in the Lines area, by any entity other than K-Electric is a direct violation of Section 21 of the NEPRA Act 1997, and there is a dire need for firm action to rid the city of these dangerous networks.
